September 18, 2018 meeting with Marie Bilodeau: Don’t Let Readers Put Your Book Down!

Marie Bilodeau will be our guest and teaching how to effectively use story hooks, chapter hooks, word choices, sentence structure, breathing space…learn ways to keep your reader on the edge of their seat and flipping pages long into the night! Weave tension and conflict like a pro throughout every aspect of your novel by pushing every element a little bit more. Do the unexpected! Challenge your characters! Keep your readers guessing! And above all, avoid that sagging middle! Don’t overuse exclamation marks! All that and much, much more. Bring notebooks, pens, laptops, and prepare to have some fun! (NOTE: No illegal methods of forcing readers to do anything will be endorsed.)

Marie Bilodeau is an Ottawa-based author and storyteller, with eight published books to her name. Her speculative fiction has won several awards and has been translated into French (Les Éditions Alire) and Chinese (SF World). Her short stories have also appeared in various anthologies. She spent a year as Deputy Publisher of The Ed Greenwood Group (TEGG), a massive publisher of shared world stories and media.

Join us at the Hintonburg Community Centre, 1064 Weelington St. W. on September 18th for what is surely going to be an explosive start to the OIW season. Meet-and-greet begins at 6:30 pm, with presentation at 7:00 until 9:00. Entrance is free to members, or a small $10 fee for non-members, applicable toward membership should you choose to join. There is plenty of parking at the rear of the Centre, and coffee and snacks will be served throughout the evening. We are looking forward to seeing you all in great numbers!

PROSE IN THE  PARK LITERARY FESTIVAL AND BOOK FAIR
    OUR WRITERS, THEIR STORIES
Meet a few of them here…

    Mike Young
    Kirk’s Landing

Mike was born and raised in Kirkland Lake, a small northern mining town with a nearby First Nations reserve. He grew up with a love of the north, even in the midst of winter, exploring the surrounding woods with his friends, and his grandfather. Kirk’s Landing, a crime novel, was his first book. In 2016, he published a sequel, Return to Kirk’s Landing.

    Patricia McCarthy

    The Crimson Man

Author of the wildly imaginative Crimson vampire series, currently consisting of (6) novels: The Crimson Man, The Crimson Boy, The Crimson Woman, The Crimson Time, The Crimson Crimes, and her latest in the series The Crimson Dream. The Crimson vampire series takes place in Ottawa, Canada.

    Craig Munro

    Bones of the Past

    Melissa Yuan-Innes

    Human Remains

The OIW in partnership with other writers groups and community associations in Ottawa organizes the largest book fair and outdoors literary festival in the National Capital Region. The most recent Prose in the Park Literary Festival and Book Fair was held on June 10, 2017 in the Parkdale Park in Ottawa. Stay tuned for details on future festivals. In the meantime, click here to visit the 2017 Prose in the Park website.

Craig has spent his life traveling and moving from one field of work to another. A voracious fan of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, it was only a matter of time before he turned his mind to creating a world of his own. The Bones of the Past is the first installment in the epic fantasy series – The Books of Dust and Bone.

Melissa Yuan-Innes (Melissa Yi) is an emergency room physician. Her newest Hope Sze crime novel is HUMAN REMAINS. THE STOCKHOLM SYNDROME, a previous Hope Sze novel, was selected by CBC Radio as a best crime novel of the season.

A variety of creative writing opportunities!

Among Ontario’s kids camps for creative writers you’ll find camps that focus on scriptwriting, film schools, camps for theatre arts and a variety of other kids’ writing camps. Writing camps focus on workshops where ideas are shared and instructors and students discuss character development, plot, tone and all other aspects of short stories, drama, more. The young writer in your family will learn more about him or herself while the camp environment fosters creativity and personal development.

Learn more about the value of a summer break at a creative writing camp!

Camps listed first above are summer camps with creative writing as one of the focus activities but many are arts camps  (both performing and visual arts ) that will expose your young creative writer to the performing arts, fine arts and other art forms that will help him or her branch out in creativity, learning from other art forms.
