Joint & Dual Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
ANU is committed to the delivery of high quality research training of PhD candidates through the provision of an exceptional research environment and access to the opportunities to work with the best researchers nationally and internationally. Research students at ANU are mentored by world-leading experts, have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and become part of a supportive community and culture of discovery.
Joint and dual award PhD programs are offered by ANU with a limited number of partners who are able to deliver an outstanding research training experience in a collaborative environment across two institutions. A joint award refers to an award by two collaborating institutions recognised by a single testamur. A dual Award refers to an award by two collaborating institutions issuing two testamurs, each recognising that the program was carried out as part of a dual award.
Joint and dual award PhD programs allow research students opportunities to:
- participate in collaborative projects between supervisors at home and host institutions
- experience multiple research environments
- live and work in different locations.
Formal agreements between the ANU and the following partner Universities allow Institutional joint and dual award PhD programs.
- Beijing Institute of Technology: Dual PhD in ANU College of Engineering & Computer Science
- Friedrich Schiller University (FSU): Dual-Award PhD Degree Program
- Humboldt University (HU): Dual-Award PhD Degree Program
- National University of Singapore: Joint PhD in physics

- Go8 Universities
Individual dual award programs (referred to as cotutelle programs when undertaken with a French University) may be established for a single student, with approval, where there is a strong research link between supervisors at both institutions. An outstanding collaborative research training environment must be present with clear benefits for the PhD student above and beyond a simple visiting appointment to conduct research at another institution.
