Theses from other universities

The Library holds some theses from other universities, and provides access to hundreds of thousands of others online. There are many national and international websites and databases with lists of theses, some with full-text that you can download.

For English language theses, begin with these collections:

    Coverage is comprehensive for North American universities and there are also theses from many other countries. Over 2,000,000 references, with about 1,000,000 available to download.

Theses in progress

There is no single comprehensive listing for all theses in progress. However there are a number of websites and publications which list current research, and many university departments list theses in progress.

Use Google Scholar to search for the phrases “PhD in progress” or “thesis in progress“.

  • PhDdata
    This is a new and developing site, with just a few thousand theses, but it has a database of doctoral dissertations in progress around the world.

Description: Indexes 90% of doctoral dissertations and some master’s theses accepted each year in North America, plus thousands more from around the world. Includes free full-text (in PDF) for all U-M and Big Ten Academic Alliance institutions dissertations since 1997, as well as for selected other institutions and years.
Access: Limited to authorized UM users (through validated sign-on).

Doctoral Dissertations in Musicology-Online
Description: A database currently containing over 14,000 bibliographic records for completed dissertations and new dissertation topics in the fields of musicology, music theory, and ethnomusicology, as well as in related musical, scientific, and humanistic disciplines.
Access: Open to all internet users.

Coverage: Current cumulative file. (Describes library-held materials dated from prehistory to the present.)
Description: Provides bibliographic and citation information for over 179 million books, periodicals, sound recordings, videos, musical scores, dissertations, archival materials and much more, representing the holdings of most libraries in North America, some libraries in Europe, and the national library of Australia.
Access: Limited to authorized UM users (through validated sign-on).

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature [EBSCO]
Coverage: 1967 –
Description: Indexes international scholarly literature in all genres of music, as well as music education, theory, therapy, and ethnomusicology. Currently provides verified bibliographic information with full citations and abstracts for over 600,000 records covering all document types: articles, books, bibliographies, catalogues, dissertations, Festschriften, iconographies, critical commentaries to complete works, ethnographic recordings, conference proceedings, electronic resources, reviews, and more. Full text is available for select items.
Access: Limited to authorized UM users (through validated sign-on).
