Play to Max Level in a TOS Constitution Class Cruiser – Tips?

One character I've got going is attempting to play tricked out as the Original Series. Uniforms, ship, weaponry, etc. I know this is against the grain of the game's design. This is a personal goal, not a plea to change the game.

Ground missions work out fine. I guess I'm not picky about the hand weapons. Honestly, it didn't occur to me until now that perhaps I should have stuck to phaser 2 sidearms, though I'm not sure I could have found enough of them to equip my crew.

Space combat is proving to be quite a challenge. I had to give up playing missions on Elite around level 18. At level 32, I'm finding I cannot defeat any encounters with a single tough ship. I can still take down three smaller ships. I can no longer make progress in most missions, pushing me more into the PvE queue where I worry about being a drag on other players since everything seems to scale based on level, not my ship.

Anyways, what I thought I'd ask folks for any tips you might have.

Update: The Klingon War and Wasteland Episodes were quite playable and fun. For Romulan Mystery, I'm stuck at the first space combat. Since the encounters auto-scale to my level, I cannot "out-level" the encounter, it seems.

Adding to that, I think about two weeks ago some redditors did up their tier 1 ships for endgame combat for fun, I'm pretty sure I saw a constitution build posted in stobuilds.

There's a 10k T1 build floating out there somewhere.

Keep your gear updated, and I'm pretty sure there's "high" DPS builds out there for most T1 ships

Are you upgrading your ship equipment as you level, or are you staying completely stock? Do you have the stock ship you get for free or the refit

level 2

Original Poster1 point · 3 years ago

I do upgrade as I level, or as an appropriate drop is found, but I stick to phasers and photons of the original firing arcs.

Its the tier 1 cruiser, so Stock. I believe I had to pay to get it as the Miranda was the starting ship for the tutorial. By refit, you mean the tier 2 version ala the Trek movies, right?

If so, I have not used the tier 2 ship, though it is in my inventory. I thought about moving up to the tier 2 ship when I hit Admiral, but that wasn't part of the original plan.

Wow, didn't even realize there was a tier 1 ship other than the Miranda class…

There are several

  • NX-Class (From Star Trek: Enterprise)

  • Constitution Class (From The Original Series)

  • Steamrunner Class (From DS9, part of the Steam pack)

  • Oberth Class (Which, I think, was the Vulcan's science ship in one of the original movies?)

  • Andorian Light Escort – unique in Tier 1, I believe, for having a third forward firing weapon

Steamrunner is from First Contact.

Oberth class was just a standard Federation science vessel.

@xegidua 1 point · 3 years ago

Ah yeah it may have appeared in First Contact, good point – although it was also shown a fair few times in the Dominion war.

I was giving the "Source" canon for the Oberth, but yeah I think it was used after that too. I'm not sure if it ever appeared in the TOS TV programs, but it was definitely in The Motion Picture or The Search for Spock

The Oberth first appeared as U.S.S. Grissom in ST III. It was the ship that brought Saavik and David Marcus to the Genesis planet. The Klingon gunner accidentally destroyed it with a "lucky shot". (Just sharing details to jog memories.)

After that it was reused (and destroyed) over and over as a standard science vessel. It's the starship equivalent of a redshirt.

Yeh, add the original series package and you get an appropriate ship interior and uniforms to go with it. Its kind of cool, though some of your crew members will still wear a modern uniform. I've had to reprimand the Doctor, for instance. 🙂

I've had the TOS Enterprise since forever (I always run my new alts on it) – I don;t like the blue phasers, though: it's only because the the "restoration" Blue Ray changed them from orange to blue, so STO follows suit. HOWEVER – Those blue phasers that come with that ship scale up in level with you. So, technically, you can ride them all the way up as far as you want to go (even if you change ships).

As for taking the TOS Constitution (a.k.a: Enterprise) all the way up to 60… good luck with that. People have been wanting this since Beta.

What I want is to be able to use that skin on my Tier Six cruisers of similar shape: I am able to use my original T5 Excelsior skin on the new T6, why can I not use the old TOS Connie as well?

I hate to say it: but so far all the newest ships (T6 Especially) are absolutely FUGLY.

But I digress.

Those phaser banks do level up, but for some reason the DPS numbers show differently, so I'm never sure if they're as good, better, or worse than the drops.

It would be nice to be able to just reuse the TOS skin and interior. I've got other characters playing up through the modern ships and I really don't care for the interiors of the new ships. They're so… spacious. They don't remind me of a ship. They remind me more of a convention center, or even a Carnival Cruise Ship.

Why run missions on Elite anyway? It doesn't give that significant of an XP boost compared to the extra time & difficulty invested. That's just my onion, anyway.

I had not played since release and didn't know the rewards wouldn't be worth it. I did enjoy the extra challenge. I wasn't overly upset when I was forced to drop down to normal.

One of these days, I'll get that TOS bridge pack and try what you've done in an Oberth with retro beams.

It may be a hard row, but kudos for trying.

level 2

zztong

Original Poster2 points · 3 years ago

I had to look up the Oberth. It looks like 2,000 fewer hull points will make it even more of a challenge.

Overall, I'm still confident the goal is achievable, but not necessarily with solo space adventures. I can gain levels in ground missions, which perhaps feels more STO-like anyways.

I can play in PvE space queues, though I worry if that's fair to the other players. Nobody's expressed a thought about that yet. Experience and drops come slowly that way, but I don't mind the slower pace. My other toons seem to race through the levels.

I also seem to get experience via managing the duty officers.

Just a thought, but have you looked around for anyone as mad as you to team up for missions with?

Cant do it myself as I'm between stipend and out of character slots, but I kind of like the idea of two or three T1 ships taking the story missions on.

I hadn't thought of that. So when you team up it doesn't scale up the encounter?

Oh, I think it does. But suppose you have a couple of Constitutions and an Oberth. Sensor analysis acts as a nice force multiplier.

It'd be all about smart team flying.

Are you planning to use 'canon' weapons? So phasers and photon torpedoes? That might make things hard.

If anything goes, here is my Connie build. Currently parsed at 37K DPS in ISA. (I average 15-25K in most runs)

And here's some videos for fun…

Yes, I have just been using phasers and photon torpedoes, and those that match the original firing arcs. When it comes to things like engineering abilities and science abilities, I have options, but the consoles are only going to offer me one low level ability.

Thanks for the references. I'll definitely take a look at them.

You might struggle with a 'canon' build. Usually on low level ships it's better to use click universal consoles for extra abilities, but unless you can find something that Kirk used, that's probably not an option.

I'd definitely recommend speccing into torpedo's more than usual and using torp cd doffs. Obviously you'll have to run the retrofit phaser array as well.

The hardest part about using a T1 ship in end game is the 13K hull. The reactive armor catalysts are awesome as an extra heal. I also use the invincible starship trait from the zahl cruiser, although that sometimes just delays the inevitable. Pedal to the Metal is good because it's not a good idea to stop at any point, or you'll probably die.

Thanks for the tips. I'll have to look up some of those suggestions and see what I can do. So far the experiment has reached level 43 mostly by focusing on ground missions and space encounters where there are other players. Laying in enough damage to be helpful hasn't been a problem, so long as I don't draw agro.

Perhaps not so strangely, focusing on ground missions feels a bit more like the original Star Trek. This often gets tripped up because missions tend to have space combat before or after a ground mission.

I once levelled a science toon to 50 in a miranda, so I know what you're going through. Those Romulan tops can hit you hard!

I'd say that torp spread with 3x torp cd doffs will be your friend, and phasers will be more for visuals.
