Pre-MBA internship

Matriculating at the B-School of your choice is a tremendous achievement, but it shouldn’t be the end of your MBA preparation.

When you’re done celebrating with friends and family, consider a pre-MBA internship! Why? These programs can provide you with a network at your target post-MBA employer before you even step foot on campus, giving you a crucial edge over your new peers.

In the same way your stellar application essays set you apart from the crowd during application season, your pre-MBA internship helps you stand out at B-School.

What is a Pre-MBA internship?

Well, it’s an internship that happens before your MBA.

Jim from The Office, "obviously"

That’s the easy answer, but actually “pre-MBA” programs break down into TWO distinct categories which can be a biiiiiit confusing. Pre-MBA internships programs are indeed “before your MBA,” but some of them are proper internships lasting 1-3 months, while others are introductory programs, lasting only a few weeks or days.

Orientation programs are shorter and more about “getting to know you” and having fun. The objective of these programs is for potential post-MBA job applicants to get a sense of the company and to place the company solidly on their radar. They’re a marketing opportunity for the company, but a valuable networking opportunity for you (in addition to being great fun).

Here are some example pre-MBA “orientation” internships:

  • Bain Diversity Pre-MBA Program
  • Deloitte Consulting Immersion Program
  • Goldman Sachs MBA Camp / Women’s Summit
  • Proctor and Gamble pre-MBA Brand Management Camp
  • JP Morgan Early Advantage
  • Forté Fast Track program (open to women only)
  • Google Student Veteran Summit (for veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces)
  • Credit Suisse MBA Military Bootcamp
  • William Blair LIFT program

More rare are full internships, which take place in the summer before matriculation. There are structured programs offered by larger, more established companies, for example Barclays MBA Ambition , however most full-time pre-MBA internships are not “official” internships, but the result of motivated applicants cold-calling, cold-emailing or networking to get that first foothold in their target industries.

Obviously these pre-MBA internships are harder to find, but they can also pay off the most. They, along with your first-year summer internship, give you two chances to make an impression on your target post-MBA employer.

Who are pre-MBA programs for?

Orientation programs, given their brevity (1-7 days), are useful to anyone. The limited scope works even for people who can spare only a day or two on their way to B-School. However, the orientation material covered is particularly useful for out-of-industry applicants and non-traditional MBA students who might not be as familiar with the basics. Also, keep in mind that many of these orientation programs are diversity-related (open only to specific minority groups).

Full-time internships are especially valuable to career-switchers , and especially those switching into traditional pre-MBA fields: for example, Consulting, Finance, Healthcare, and Tech. Since many MBA students have prior experience in these sectors, career-switchers need as many internships as they can get in order to compete. Similarly, these opportunities are also especially valuable for non-traditional applicants who may lack the corporate network that many of their peers already possess.

What are the advantages of a Pre-MBA program?

The advantages are many, especially if you are changing industries. You get a jump on your peers, a network in your target industry, insight, experience, and another prestigious program name on your resume. So get to it! (And just when you thought you were finally done with those pesky applications…)

 Pre-MBA Opportunities

On occasion, employers will share pre-MBA opportunities with our MBA Career Management office. Opportunities will be posted in order of when applications are due.

What is a pre-MBA internship and should I pursue one?

There are two typical types of Pre-MBA internships.  The first is offered by larger, established companies who provide structured experiences that may carry through into an MBA summer internship opportunity, acceptance of which may be obligatory.  The second is Pre-MBA internships that are typically secured through networking and are focused on gaining industry or functional experience with no expectation or obligation of an MBA summer internship position.

The decision to pursue and/or accept a pre-MBA internship is left to the discretion of each admitted student. Individuals should not feel that it is necessary to conduct a Pre-MBA internship (structured or unstructured) in order to be successful in recruiting for summer internships or full-time positions while at Wharton.  At Wharton, you will be provided with numerous academic, social, and leadership opportunities to grow your professional skill set.  You will also have access to a best-in-class career management team that will help you devise and implement a strategic and successful job search.

Occasionally, companies will host receptions to congratulate the incoming members of top MBA programs. These events will also be posted on this list.

Can I contact MBA Career Management about pre-MBA internships?

As MBA Career Management (MBACM) is dedicated to supporting current students in their search for summer and full-time opportunities, the team is unable to support the search process surrounding Pre-MBA internships.  MBACM looks forward to working with admitted students once they arrive in Philadelphia for Pre-Term.

If you are in conversation with a company about a summer internship during your first year as an MBA (i.e. next summer), we recommend that you speak with a career advisor before making a decision and finalizing your plans. If you receive a first year summer internship offer before arriving to campus in the fall, please contact us so we can assist you.

In the last few weeks, I’ve been getting tons of PMs from various members regarding pre-MBA internship opportunities. How does one find such an opportunity? What kind of opportunities are out there? Is it something one must do before starting his or her first year in the MBA program?

Pre-MBA internship is not too common but others have done it. (In my opinion, the opportunities are out there for people who are seeking for such opportunity) Some spent time with a PE/VC, etc to build his/her resume to get into the industry that he/she is attracted to. If you are really interested in pre-MBA internship, you will have to network a lot. Some MC firms also host pre-MBA social events and opportunities targeted towards ppl admitted to prestigious MBA programs.

For example, previous members of this forum:
    * Did his/her pre MBA internship with a healthcare company before attending Kellogg
    * Did his/her pre MBA internship with a PE firm before attending Wharton

I did a pre MBA internship with a VC firm in order to build my resume targeted towards technology firms in the West Coast. But the experience also gave me tons to discuss during my IB internship interviews. The pre MBA internship gave me the opportunity to learn a lot about how VC firms work with its portfolio companies, etc.

If you are interested in doing a pre MBA internship, remember that the opportunity may be paid or unpaid. In addition, this probably means that either, you will have to quit your job sooner than planned, or sacrifice your summer (right before bschool) working.

Here are various links that you can go through to get some perspective: (But Mostly to Demonstrate that Pre-MBA Internships are more common than one would imagine)

    * Pre MBA Internship at Tech Start Up Company – London Business School student
    * JP Morgan Pre MBA – MBA Early Advantage Program
    * Citi Pre MBA Fellowship Program
    * Lehman Brothers used to have a Pre MBA Internships ? – INSEAD
    * MLT Fellowship includes opportunities for Pre-MBA Internship
    * Eli Lilly Bonini Scholars – Pre MBA Internship – Stanford GSB
    * Emailing for Pre-MBA Internships
    * Examples of Pre MBA Internship Found on Linkedin

    * Kellogg Student’s Pre MBA VC Internship ( more )
    * Booth Student’s Pre MBA Internship @ UBS

Indiana MBA (Kelley) Program’s Response to Helping Its Students w Pre MBA Internships:

Yes, some companies sometimes offer pre-MBA internships. While we do not coordinate a Pre-MBA internship program per se, we are happy to provide our incoming MBAs with contacts and resources to facilitate their pre-MBA internship search. Understand though that your ability to secure an internship will primarily depend on your ability to convey your value as an MBA candidate for any given company. I would suggest that you connect with me offline ([email protected]) so that we can see how our office can help you with career self-assessment, exploration and your internship search through Kelley.

I think the pre-MBA internship generally falls into the category of "it’s all who you know". With that said, two of the more structured programs that folks did were:

P&G Brand Camp (this is only a week, but they do make internship offers at the end)
    Deloitte Consulting Immersion Program (DCIP)

I think there are some other opportunities for minorities as well.

Does anyone know if the P&G Brand Camp is only for minorities? It’s not entirely clear on their website.

Thanks guys. Does anyone know of programs that aren’t specifically for minorities? This sounds interesting, but I don’t know if I qualify.

what about international students? How do you pursue such internships ?
Just need some insights from someone who is an international student and did an internship in home country/country of study. Any pointers from others are welcome as well.
    This thread is really informative.

I’m an international and I’m doing a preMBA internship in the US. I made it happen the most common way (IMO) – networking. Of course, it’s easier to do from Canada than overseas. For visa reasons, however, the position is unpaid.

Have any MBA students matriculating in Fall 2012 had any luck with securing pre-MBA internships this year? How have responses been so far for any inquiries?

I know many of you have just heard back with your acceptances, but I wanted to see if I could gauge the market. I am planning on matriculating in 2013 and wanted to check on best practices before I start networking. I am interested in management consulting, so any specific examples or observations in that industry would be most appreciated.
