Defenders of Freedom

By Hanaa Tatby – 5th Grader at Leonard Lawrence

Imagine if you were a little kid in a country that was in danger. There are thousands of kids in some serious danger right now because their country does not have enough volunteers to protect and serve. In some cases, there is even conflict within a country. That is exactly why I will be sharing the importance of celebrating Veterans Day.

I feel very fortunate to live in a country that was built on freedom. Freedom to me is a privilege. Think of these simple freedoms that we take for granted. We don’t have slaves. Men and women are seen as equals. And, education for all children is a priority. The reason we are able to keep our freedoms is because of veterans and active duty military.

They are the reason why we are safe and are able to keep our freedom. Without veterans, I don’t know what this world could come to. When they were serving in the armed forces, they helped keep our country stable so we do not have to live in fear.

It is a tremendous honor that I have four veterans in my family. Two were in the Air Force my step-grandfather and my uncle. Two were in the Army-my great grandfather and my great uncle. Each spent time overseas, away from their families. Together, they fought in (or supported) World War II, the Vietnam War, and the War in Iraq.

Every night, I sleep peacefully knowing I am safe. I’ve never had to hear the sound of war close to home. This November 11, I will be praying for those people serving in the military and thankful for those who are veterans.
